Can I Really Do This?

Challenges and opportunities transpire every day in learning activities and social interactions. How ASD members think about and respond to these situations affects their ability to tackle future problems. Building resilience means nurturing our members' beliefs that they are in control of their actions and are capable. By supporting these beliefs, we can give members confidence in their ideas and their ability to face challenges.

WHY ASD SOCIAL IS NEEDED

Children and adults with autism have difficulty with verbal and non-verbal communication. For example, they may not understand or appropriately use:

  • Gestures

  • Eye contact

  • Facial expressions

  • Tone of voice

  • Expressions not meant to be taken literally

  • Recognizing emotions and intentions in others

  • Recognizing one’s own emotions

  • Expressing emotions

  • Seeking emotional comfort from others

  • Feeling overwhelmed in social situations

  • Taking turns in conversation

  • Gauging personal space (appropriate distance between people)

How ASD Social works…

ASD Social involves dialogue, techniques, coping skills, and emotional support with the purpose of teaching specific appropriate behavior patterns and transitioning them into habits.
